As a manager that I fully embrace transparency and support other leaders, I've been always a bit skeptical about the "Shit Umbrella" concept. In fact, I wrote a dedicate article about it.
That said, we need to find the balance because there are tricky situations where one cannot be transparent. And also it's not only about that, but about protecting the team so they can focus without having to deal with the "shitty" distractions.
Thanks Rafa for sharing your thoughts. Most of my posts are meant to teach and share some learnings with others. This one is primarily for me to learn 😊
I'm going through a unique phase (reorgs, charter/priority changes, etc.). This post started as a reflection of those situations and what I need to do in this crazy phase. So yeah, it's very personal and reflective of my reality (so were my last 2 posts). Now you know why it's called Diary of an Engineering Manager 😎
The biggest takeaway is that there's no golden rule in management. It all depends on the situation. Micromanagement is bad in some situations, while good in others. Feedback is a must in some, optional in others. As managers, that flexibility to find the right setting is the only constant!
